Abstract

There are already two copies of this magnificent first volume in the collection – besides two, three, or four different states of the first edition from 1838. The other two 1839 copies come from Safari in San Diego and from Mr Diggy in Schaumburg, IL. The major differences among these three are in the earliest pages. The Schaumburg copy has a different frontispiece than the other two. This copy and the Safari copy vary the order of their first pages, specifically the place of the simplest title-page with reference to the more elaborate title-page. In this copy, that simpler page comes after the frontispiece. This copy is remarkable, as is the Schaumburg copy, for its clean pages. No foxing! Its spine is tender. A beautiful book. At an inexpensive price on Ebay, I could not resist!
