Abstract
Here is a Bias eight-page oversize pamphlet with LM on its cover. It contains four of La Fontaine's fables with a full-page colored illustration for each. Text and illustration are matched by being on opposite sides of the same page. In this short pamphlet, we thus have two texts facing each other at the stapled center. The four fables here are GA; "The Horse and the Mule"; "The Ears of the Rabbit"; and OF. This booklet relates to at least three other larger Bias pamphlets in the collection by using the same illustrations and texts. By comparison with our 1952 copy, this booklet uses every second fable and in reverse order. That copy, with "Horse and Mule" on its cover, has "361" on both covers. By comparison with our 1950 copy with FC on its cover, it uses the first two and last two. That copy has "361" on its back cover. By comparison with a copy having GA on its cover, for which I have guessed a date of 1948, the present copy has the first two and last two. That copy has "361 U" on its front cover. Might it be that Bias was not careful about what it put into various editions and how it labeled them? Do not miss the expressive illustration of "Le Cheval et l'Ane." OF is also a very good illustration; the frog seems off-balance with its increased size. As I wrote earlier, my sense is that there were many such simple editions of La Fontaine around in France in the post-war years. Check under Gordinne and especially Liege to find more of them.
