The National Geographic Magazine for February has an interesting and richly illustrated article on the eruption, of Katmai Volcano in Alaska on June 6, 1912. Although fortunately not a single life was lost, the magnitude of the eruption seems to have been equal to that of Krakatoa in 1883. The explosion was heard 900 miles away. The town of Kodiak a hundred miles away was in utter darkness for 60 hours. The rain of ashes extended over 375 miles, and the deposit was so heavy that all vegetation within 15 miles was completely destroyed. The fine ashes in the air made breathing difficult and attacked the eyes so much that wild game was blinded.
