Abstract
Here is a fascinating book found in my few days in Lisbon. I am surprised that I had never heard of it, but I have heard of few Portuguese fable books. First, this is a copy in only fair condition. There are some missing pages in this book with a deteriorating spine: for example, the title-page and XIX. I suspect that a dedication page is also missing. The fable text pages seem to be intact. There are 231 verse fables on 384 pages. Secondly, researching the book uncovers some mysteries. There are both a first and a second edition available for viewing on Internet Archives. The first edition in 1885 is some 1076 pages long. It has 366 fables on 827 pages, followed by notes. Its division of texts and its pagination of the first 231 fables do not align with those in our edition, though the sequence of fables seems to. Internet Archives also has a second edition, but it is not our second edition. Comparison seems to show that the first 231 fables there are identical with all 231 here in their division of texts and pagination. That edition seems to have 366 fables on 610 pages, followed by notes. Apparently the typeface and the margins got smaller! There is a long segment of emendations on 749-793. The title-page of this second edition lists a publication date of 1888. I will guess that date for our shorter second edition as well.
