Abstract
What a master Grandville is! I have several copies of Garnier's edition of his La Fontaine from 1868. I presumed, as I so often have, that I was buying a possibly better copy of a book I had already found. Again I was mistaken. It is a good copy. The pictures are excellent! The book was a chance find. Its price was marked as $200, and the store was offering a 40% off sale. I asked if they were open to negotiating; I was ready to offer $80. Their buyer inspected the book, came to the decision that they had not adequately priced it, and put its price at $100. The result was a wonderful bargain at $60. The book belongs in Bodemann between #288.5 and #288.6. Bodemann's first Grandville La Fontaine published by Garnier Frères is in 1868 and is numbered #288.11. That is the edition mentioned above, of which I have several copies. So this edition might be rather rare! By contrast with all three copies of the 1868 edition, this copy does not have the apparent misprint donnna in the first line of II 5. As I say elsewhere, Hobbs has excellent comments on the quality of Grandville's illustrations. A treasure!
