Abstract
Background: Approximately 10,900 new HPV-attributable cervical cancer cases are reported yearly, while awareness of the relation between HPV and cancer remains low. Only 64% of the population report being knowledgeable regarding HPV. Healthy People 2030 demonstrated that 48% of adolescents had received the HPV vaccine by 2018, with the goal at 80% by 2030.|Purpose: The purpose of this quality improvement project is to implement an educational handout to parents of children 9-18 years of age to increase vaccine HPV rates in a Midwestern suburban clinic.|Methods: A researcher-developed educational handout and questionnaire about HPV were distributed to parents and/or patients 9-18 years old from September through December 2021. The questionnaire included comments designed to establish knowledge and readiness for the HPV vaccine. Statistical analysis was completed to determine participation and vaccination rates.|Evaluation: Out of 100 surveys and educational handouts submitted, 15 were completed and returned. Of those 15 returned, 80% answered that the educational handout enhanced the decision to get the HPV vaccine.|Implications: This quality improvement project demonstrated the importance of education to parents and patients regarding vaccinations. Recommendation of vaccinations and education to parents appears to increase vaccination compliance. Further education and surveys in a larger population would assist in establishing best practice.
