Abstract
This publication, apparently an exhibition catalogue from the Kawamura Memorial Museum of Art, fills an important niche in our gathering of materials on Chagall's La Fontaine etchings. It offers in its first chapter a fine 4" x 5" image of every one of the hundred colored etchings. These are numbered 1-1 through 1-100. Then ten of the etchings not colored are offered in smaller images, 2¼" x 2¾", numbered 1-101 through 1-110. The next chapter, starting on page 121 seems to compare Chagall's colored etching with his painting of the same subject, "The Shepherd and the Sea," including 2-1, 2-2, and 3. Succeeding numbered chapters, as the closing T of C, clarifies, take up Chauveau, Bewick, Grandville, Brendel, Chauvel, Doré, Bracquemond, Gustave Moreau, Barboutau, Kawakami, and Hasegawa. This is a fascinating book, 99 per cent of which is in Japanese! Heavy board covers. 186 pages. About 8" wide by 7¾" high. A lovely feature of the book is the signature of Chagall lightly discernible across the front cover.
