Abstract

This is a surprising find. The collection has perhaps a dozen works featuring Chodowiecki, but they seem to be either anthologies or mostly the work of Christian Furchtegott Gellert. Here is only Lessing in a beautiful volume with twelve copper engravings from Chodowiecki. Here is Peter Everaers' description: "Chodowiecki - Lessing - Aus Lessings Fabeln. Berlin, Eigenbrödler-Verlag, n.d. (ca 1925?). Original gilt cloth, unnumbered pages. Ca. 25,5 x 18 cm. "Mit 12 Kupfern von Daniel Chodowiecki" with blank versos. Numbered edition of 1000 copies (this is 941); uncut. Printed in blue and black by 'der Offizin von Otto von Holten in Berlin'; design of the binding by Erwin Rechenberg. Somewhat rust stained throughout; light traces of use; good copy." I am surprised that the engravings are French, including a title and a key line. They are protected by tissue. Surprises continue with this book, as is clear from the closing T of C in German. It lists only ten poems! ("The Hermit" has three illustrations.) This large book is only 37 thick pages long! This time through, I enjoyed three of the fables, "Die Schöne von hinten"; "Die Küsse"; "Der Riese"; and "Der Tod."
