Abstract

Here is a large (8½" x 9⅜") paperbound book with bilingual French and Arabic texts and an image for each of 73 fables. It has been an exciting encounter! Some of the best illustrations include "Red Kite and Nightingale" (99); 2W (139); "Lion and Mosquito (219); and DLS (267). There are surprising things in this book. First, the dull finish of the pages do not serve the art here as well as brighter pages do elsewhere, as for example in the Aractingi volumes from Z'editions. The illustrations seem to be the same as those in the Z'editions, and so the different visual version of GA on 111 is surprising. In addition, the coloring of Aractingi's work here is sometimes vastly different from the coloring in other editions. Examples are OR (27) and "Two Cocks" (147). 305 pages followed by a T of C and an AI. The printer seems to have exchanged two illustrations: CW (39) and TB (47).
