Abstract
Development an evidence-based toolkit that describes the role of the advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) as a liaison between the hospital and special education school setting formed the basis of this doctorate of nursing practice (DNP) project. An APRN in the special education setting stems from a need to remove significant barriers to care. The program involved two settings, including a special education setting in a public school district and a regional pediatric clinic. The information gathered was from nine key stakeholder meetings. The interview and information gathering phase framed the basis for the development of a business plan encompassing all of the components of the APRN-Liaison role. Results from the meetings were analyzed by looking for areas of consensus. This formed the basis for development of the APRN-Liaison position that offers an option to access healthcare for children with special needs by removing barriers to care.
