Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this project was to review current literature on telehealth implementation in the outpatient community health setting and make recommendations for nursing leadership to integrate telehealth into current clinical practice using the ACE Star Model of Knowledge Transformation framework. Background: The use of telehealth services has been on the rise in the last decade. Telehealth has been shown to be beneficial in the health care delivery system for patients, providers, and the community. Organizations must integrate telehealth into their current care models but struggle with implementation. Nursing leadership is in the unique position to work towards integrating telehealth into clinical practice. Methods: A review of current literature was conducted in search of data regarding telehealth implementation in the outpatient setting. Searches were completed within the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health literature (CINAHL) and google scholar using the key words telehealth, nursing leadership, implementation, outpatient. Articles written within the last five years were included in the review. Results: A total of twelve articles were used to complete this review. There were three systematic reviews from Kho et al. (2020), Goldstein, et al. (2018), and Kim, et al. (2020), as well as two clinical practice guideline articles from Perry, et al. (2021) and the American Medical Association (AMA) from 2022 for a total of five Level I articles. There was one qualitative study from Muska, et al. (2022) which was the only Level VI article. Conclusion: Successful implementation of telehealth services in the outpatient setting require proper needs assessment of the health system and patient population, appropriate resource allocation, and improved nursing leadership education and digital literacy.
