Abstract

This large-format canvas-spined booklet is a welcome addition to the collection for several reasons. It belongs with many other books published by Gordinne in Liège. But it has significant differences from them, particularly from the 1937 edition purchased from Dany Wolfs, with which this volume shares an attractive front-cover illustration of WC in color. This copy puts together no less than five separately paginated booklets. They number 32; 16; 4; 6; and 4 pages. The first includes five full-page colored illustrations: "Two Mules" (I 3); "The Robbers and the Ass" (I 8); "The Hornets and the Bees" (I 15); "Death and the Unhappy Man" (I 25); and "A Man and His Image" (I 31). The second "volume" includes three: "Minos' Scale" (II 3); "Steer, Horse, and Ass" (II 9); and "The White Elephant" (II 15). The second, third, and fourth volumes include fables of Florian, even though the booklet's cover and title-page refer only to La Fontaine. The first two volumes have only images on the right, but the last three volumes begin with a right-hand image. The first volume is dated 1938. Volume III has no date or publisher. The other three have "Gordinne" and 1937. A few illustrations are signed by Lemainque or Reloy.
