Abstract

Dear Dr. Smith: Thank you for allowing us to evaluate your Markoe article. Marvin Kivett, editor of Nebraska History, and three members of our staff have gone over it. We think it has merit and we would like to publish it, but we have a number of questions to pose and suggestions to offer for its revision before we accept it. There will be several months in which to recast your paper, should you wish to pursue to course we lay out, since our publication commitments would not permit us to use your article for about a year. We believe the article should deal primarily with the Catholic Church Negro community relationship in Omaha. The title should be altered to reflect this and your article should follow this theme (starting about footnote 23 or 24). The genealogical backgrounds of Fr. Markoe, his prior military and religious experiences, would be incidental to the Omaha years. Some of this material could be woven into the narrative, some relegated to footnotes, some deleted. Perhaps you should give consideration to writing a second article about Fr. Markoe, in which more of the material on his early life and progenitors could be used. His youthful and formative years have a picaresque quality which contrast markedly with his years as a churchman-reformer. It should make a good story. Your sources: We wonder whether you had available all the Omaha papers (Star, W.-H., True Voice) when you wrote the article. Direct quotations from newspapers (especially quotes by university, civic, church, or negro leaders) could enliven your article. Perhaps you would find even more pertinent information and you could better document your paper. Enclosed are several photostats of Markoe articles in the above-mentioned sheets. We can do a United amount of newspaper research for you, should you desire it. We would need approximate dates of occurrences in the event you do. An article of perhaps 25-30 typewritten pages would not be unreasonable in length for use in Nebraska History. Dr. Jeffrey H. Smith -2- 1/3/73 The editor suggests that you check with Mrs. Bertha Calloway, WOW-TV Omaha, a Negro reporter, for other possible leads. She is quite knowledgeable on the Negro in Omaha and has done research at this Society. Enclosed you will find two annotated xerox copies of your article—as well as the original—which indicate points at which it could be improved, clarified or amplified. We are keeping a xerox copy for our file in the event that you should wish to write us about facets of it. Phone us before you leave for the West if you need immediate response regarding the Markoe project. Our best wishes for the coming year. LGD:dvj Sincerely, r ? / L. G. DeLay Historian {
