Abstract

Background: The rate of dementia diagnoses is rapidly growing with the aging population. Individuals with dementia display a variety of symptoms, the most often troubling being neuropsychiatric symptoms. At this time there is no known cure for degenerative dementia. The Tailored Activities Program (TAP) seeks to address the neuropsychiatric symptoms of this condition through activities designed specifically to meet the needs of individuals living with dementia within their daily environment. Methods: The studies included evidence levels 1A, 1B and 2B. These peer-reviewed articles were published within the last seven years. All the studies included had to have the TAP protocol used for the interventions as well as including neuropsychiatric symptoms recorded prior to and after interventions. All the participants in the studies had to have a diagnosis of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Results: Current evidence for the TAP protocol is moderate with further research needed to confirm the effectiveness in treating these neuropsychiatric symptoms.
