Abstract

This is a lovely "Reynard," with the illustrations after Kaulbach and the twelve additional plates by Joseph Wolf. I prefer the former to the latter, which are listed on vii. This is a large (8" x 10½") and heavy volume. For me the most distinctive feature is the gold and black embossed cover illustration of Reynard at his most leisurely and lascivious, taken from the Kaulbach illustration on 33. Fable illustrations in this volume include "The Horse, the Wolf, and Writing on the Horse's Shoe" (211); "The Ass and the Dog" (265); WC (269); and "The Fox and the Wolf in the Well" (294). I do not completely understand the origin of the book. I would guess that Ballantyne Press in Edinburgh printed 400 copies specifically for Roberts Brothers and USA distribution and then hand-numbered some of those copies. The book once belonged to Orlando Fleming Barnes.
