Fr. Don Driscoll,S.J. a beloved member of Creighton's Jesuit Community, died suddenly on March 21. Read more about his life and here.||I'm writing this the day after the funeral of Fr. Don Driscoll, SJ. If you haven't heard the stories from his wake service, do yourself a favor and listen. He was a very dear and colorful Jesuit who touched the lives of many.|My own sense of loss now raises a similar question to that of these two disciples who were traveling to Emmaus: "Why?" Why did it have to happen this way? Why was he taken as a young man? (73 years old is now young (!), get it? I didn't until now.) |Jesus says, "O, how foolish you are! How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?" Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he now interprets for all of us what referred to him in all the Scriptures. |"Yeah, but... this hurts!" |Then beginning once again with Moses and all the prophets, he interprets for all of us what referred to him in all the Scriptures. |"You mean that all our suffering is tied to yours?" |Then, we sit with him at table as he breaks bread. |O Christ, open our eyes to your presence in the Breaking of the Bread. Teach us why we have to suffer and be brought into the glory of Christ. Help us, like all your great saints to become willing and able to embrace your cross with joy and to find life anew in that embrace.
