FIRST PARAGRAPH(S)|Chief Justice William C. Hastings was born in Newman Grove, Nebraska in 1921. He received a B.S. in business administration from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1942. In 1946, he received his J.D. from the University of Nebraska College of Law. Appointed Chief Justice by Governor Orr on August 28, 1987, he began his duties on September 2, 1987.|Prior to his appointment, Chief Justice Hastings had served on the Nebraska Supreme Court for District No. 1 since 1979. He sat as Judge of the District Court of Lancaster County from 1965-1979, and practiced law with Chambers, Holland, Dudgeon & Hastings in Lincoln from 1948 to 1965.|A past president of the Nebraska District Court Judges Association, Chief Justice Hastings has been actively involved in the community. He is a past president of the Lincoln Junior Chamber of Commerce, past vice president of the Lincoln Community Council, a former member of the board of directors of the Cornhusker Council of Boys Scouts, and a past elder, trustee, and deacon of the First Presbyterian Church.
