I wondered why I had not come upon this book before. Well, I have come upon it! Nelson seems to have taken over or joined with Young World and republished "Fables for Little People" from 1972. Then it was "A Little People's Library Book," and now it is "A Young World Library Book." The T of C has disappeared and now Nelson does its printing not in Ipswich but in Exeter, at least for this book. As I wrote of the earlier book, here are twenty fables, each with two facing pages. The versions are careful, and the illustrations playful and charming. In LM, the lion is only tied to a tree; the mouse's task seems easier (9). SW is well told (14). The version of BC is clever: it does not specify the problem, but simply has an old and wise mouse ask "Which of us is going to hang the bell around the cat's neck?" (21). My favorites are the two illustrations for "The Old Lady and the Doctor" (24-25). Haywood's approach to the underlying character of the new wife is clever: paws, eyes, and ears are catlike (39). Some young artist doodled on 37.
