Abstract
I am not sure that this story is a fable, but it is engaging and well told. It may go beyond the version of "The Little Red Hen" that is most widespread. The first part seems identical with the traditional story, except perhaps that this little red hen lives with a cat and mouse. They refuse work and so are refused food, while the little red hen does all the work and enjoys the soup she has cooked. The other two animals seem to be converted. This version then has a fox throwing all three into a sack. The little red hen has had a scissors under her wing and cuts their way out. They fill the sack with three large rocks and go home to a cooperative life. The fox breaks the family kettle with his rocks, and falls from the roof when the woman of his house hits him with a wooden shoe. The black-and-white illustrations are stylized and effective. 7¾" x 10¼. Unpaginated. Apparently translated from a Czech original.
