Abstract
Here is a small pair of volumes, 3½" x 5½". This first volume has five pages of illustrations, each with six small squares with a fable title beneath each. The illustrations are actually quite strong for the very limited space. The correspondence between illustrations and texts is a bit strained. The frontispiece is actually a long way from the first book of fables but offers six fables from Book I. The set at the beginning of Book II dips back into Book I (FS) and ahead into Book III (BM). The pages of illustrations before Books III and IV are both concentrated on their respective books. The last set of illustrations, at the beginning of Book V, dips back into Book IV for "The Lark and Her Young." There is no set of illustrations at the beginning of Book VI. This first volume has over 100 pages of preliminary material, including 13 pages of an AI. Green leather cover with an embossed geometric design. Printed by Firmin Didot Freres.
