Abstract

It has been engaging to catalogue this booklet, first taken out of the library in 1924. A translation app on my phone has helped to make sense of the Welsh on the cover and title-page. 72 pages. 5⅜" x 7⅛". The green canvas cover features FC. The beginning AI of titles lists 44 fables. Humphreys creates a variety of designs, from full-page to partial-page. Among the more fascinating of these is TP, which has a variety of pots and cups and pails with faces sitting on a shelf and hanging from hooks (31). On 32, five of them are swimming. Humphreys may be at his best dealing with mirror-images, including the stag at the pool (41) and DS (70). Humphey's illustration for TH on 44 can at first be hard to decipher, until one realizes that the hare is horizontal as the tortoise passes him by. The most dramatic of the full-page illustrations shows the ass about to hit the water at the end of MSA (53). A young hand has colored the fox in FG on 27. A delightful little find!
