Abstract

I have enjoyed reading the first four of the eleven stories here. They may be more properly wistful, evocative short stories. The first tells of a half-built doghouse for a dog that did not need a house and died before it was finished. The second is a sad tale that has two last soldiers, out of ammunition, telling and hearing a story of how war first started. One decides to get up and tell the story to the enemy when the machine gun goes after him. The second decides the next morning to see if his buddy succeeded: he gets up and starts walking -- and then the machine gun starts again. The third is a clever story of a gnome responding to a boy's wish in a way he might not have expected. The fourth tells of a man who worked hard and built a lovely house and garden. He began to fear theft from the garden so he built a fence, but then he had to reinforce the fence. Soon enough he needed the bricks from his house to make his fence strong enough. It was a great fence! This is a delightful pamphlet. I will try to get the second installment. 41 pages. T of C at the beginning. 5½" x 8".
