Abstract

BACKGROUND: Currently, 1 in every 11 children are diagnosis with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). ADHD is a neurological disorder which impairs a person’s ability to pay attention during tasks and can be associated with negative behaviors such as yelling, hitting, etc. which further impacts their ability to participate in everyday activities. Children with ADHD have a difficult time participating in school-based activities due to attention deficits. In today's school system, school-based occupational therapists utilize sensory integration techniques with children with ADHD to improve outcomes in school performance, social skills, and community integration. AIM: This critically appraised topic (CAT) is aimed at determining the effectiveness of sensory-based intervention for school-aged children with ADHD to improve school participation. METHODS: Level 1 and level 2 randomized control studies and level 1 systematic reviews were analyzed and were included in the CAT if the article was published within the last 10 years, included participants between the age of 3 to 17 years old, participants with an established diagnosis of ADHD, and included sensory based interventions. RESULTS: Level I and II research completed on sensory-based interventions revealed no significant evidence regarding school participation in school-aged children with ADHD.
