Abstract
This 16-page pamphlet served as catalogue for a travelling exhibit – the first in the USA of the work of Félix Lorioux – that visited some six museums. Yves and Claudine Lebrun curated the exhibit. There is a good deal of fascinating information on Lorioux here. He started work principally in advertising but was regularly drawn to animals, particularly insects, and to the world of fantasy and imagination rather than to the everyday world around him. His career reached something of a high point in Hachette’s “Albums Lorioux” published between 1921 and 1932. Later he worked with Marcus in Nantes to produce excellent albums again of La Fontaine and also of “Le Buffon des Enfants.” This history may explain why our collection has two cycles of Lorioux fable work. He had apparent similarities and perhaps even contacts with Walt Disney. The one fable illustration in this pamphlet shows the grasshopper singing away in summer above an insect audience (15). That audience is as striking as the artist with his massive guitar! This man’s art always deserves serious consideration and regularly yields sheer delight!
