Abstract
This book brings several surprises. First, I had just catalogued, perhaps a week ago, a second half of an 1813 La Fontaine published by Belin, and had wished for a chance to find the first half. I am making my way through boxes of books set aside months and years ago, with many a surprise as I get back to them. Here of all things is a full volume of La Fontaine from 1813 published by Belin. I thought that my ship had come in! The next surprise was of a more negative sort. As I looked through the book, I noticed that, though this book has larger margins, the text portion of the pages was indeed identical, but that the illustrations were far from identical. They are in fact of different subjects and in a different format. Those illustrations had signatures by Charles Chasselat and Robert DeLauney. These have no signatures. To further complicate things, these illustrations have a fable number and title beneath each and the book of La Fontaine's fables in which it occurs at the upper left. All fit perfectly, but the page number indicated in the upper right does not fit for any. I noted as I researched that edition that Bodemann describes an edition of 1812 by Corbet and Hadamard. Their description seems to fit this volume, especially the note that the page number at the top does not fit. There is confusion, I believe, in that remark, for it seems to say of the 1812 edition that its pagination fits not this but the 1812 edition. At any rate the frontispiece illustration given there is not here. The Bodemann description mentions twelve illustrations. I can find ten here. There is an AI on 389-402. I will carry on the hunt for the first volume and the 1812 original edition!
