INTRODUCTION|Once a defendant is found guilty of first-degree murder in Nebraska, the factual circumstances surrounding the murder largely determine whether the defendant is sentenced to life imprisonment or death. In 1973, the Nebraska Unicameral enacted a statute defining eight aggravating circumstances to assist sentencing judges in determining whether a particular first-degree murder warranted the imposition of the death penalty.
