Abstract

This large-format booklet of some 20 pages brought a surprise. I was looking through some shelves of high-quality small-press books when I noticed the signature at the end of this booklet's colophon: "P. Everaers." My, how things come together! It is from Peter as he was retiring around the Christmas holidays that I bought a number of fable books. A little further examination surprised me with the name "Rik van Daele." I worked closely with Rik on the long article I wrote for "Tiecelijn," an article that came out just as I was privileged to participate in a Leiden conference on fable in December. The present work is an introduction to a "blockbook" (?) of some six pages, complete with three strong woodcuts. These depict the lion's court, the bear's torment as he is caught in the log, and Renard holding a liturgical (?) book for the hare. This hare is bound for a rough time!
