Abstract
Today's readings are all about the "spoken word". "Thus faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ". While we have all heard that "actions speak louder than words" our actions hopefully follow what Jesus and others have spoken to us about how we are called to live our lives.||I came away from the readings considering my need to reflect more on the written word in scripture. And my need to re-read the experiences of Jesus and the members of the early church in order to find personal meaning in my life today. When Jesus speaks to Peter, Andrew, John, James and Zebedee, "Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men"- what do those words say to me today? How do I put those words into action today?|Jesus may be indicating that I "come after him"- meaning I am living 2000+ years later. Yet, I have been called by God, to know the life and lessons of Jesus, who has gone before me. As a Christian, a follower of Christ, I need to recognize and to understand the words of Jesus and what He taught all people who paid attention to his "words of wisdom". If I understand and grow in my understanding of what Jesus said, as recorded in scripture, than I am invited to share "the good news" with all humanity.|Peter and Andrew were "casting their nets" or simply said, "living their lives" when Jesus offered an opportunity to live bigger and become "fishers of men". James and John might have been in transition in life or might have been feeling broken and needed mending when Jesus called out to them to become "fishers of men". The words in today's readings invite me to reflect on my calling from God, my spiritual well-being and to consider my role in "speaking" with others about the word of God. The words, spoken by Jesus, affect how I make sense in life, how I make choices, how I relate to people, how I live my life. My faith is alive in my heart because I have paid attention and have been blessed to have heard, "The word of the Lord".
