Abstract

Sleep is important to the optimal functioning of human beings because it is during this time that the body and brain get rest and restoration. However, many people in the United States have a low awareness of sleep health and do not get sufficient sleep. Sleep health is increasingly becoming a topic of interest especially since it became one of the focus points of Healthy People 2020. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM), approximately 50-70 million people in the United States have problems with sleep-related issues. Since poor sleep health has been shown to be strongly associated with the development of multiple chronic health conditions, it is imperative for primary care providers to routinely screen for potential sleep disruption in the patient population which they serve. It is important that sleep health education be made available to patients and health care providers to create an increased awareness of this important mechanism of human existence. The purpose of this scholarly project was to utilize a developed program to assist in promoting sleep health awareness and education among primary care nurse practitioners (NPs) and their patients.
