Abstract

Maximilian Maria Ströter died in 1979, as the rare mention of him on the internet confirms. Here is a 109-page paperback featuring some 69 fables as well as a "68a." I tried the first several and found them understandable and pleasing. They deal frequently with the subjectivity of perception, especially as it concerns artistic quality. Dogs rate cooks on what kind of food they throw out the window. An ornamental cherry tree answers critics who say that it does not bear fruit: "Lasst auch die Künstler leben, wenn ihr die Köche lobt" (5). A piece of wood floats on the surface of the sea for a long time and proclaims that it knows the sea. A fish surfaces to challenge: "How can you know the sea when you have been only on its surface?" (6). Fable #7 tells CJ along with La Fontaine's human parallel. "Jeder hat seinen Geschmack, seine Wertschätzung -- und wie leicht wird mancher zum Ignoranten!" (9).
