Abstract
Box and title are slightly misleading in the case of this book, which is really a composite of Goethe's "Reineke" and "Die Gänse," along with several introductions, commentaries, and a bibliography. "Die Gänse" is a much shorter poem, labeled as a "Fabel" in twelve cantos "nach Tischbeinschen Ideen und Zeichnungen von Henriette Hermes [Auszüge]." From my acquaintance with "Reineke," I enjoying seeing the colored illustrations like these along the way: "Fox and Bear at the Felled Tree" (55); "Bear, Cat, and Wolf Bring the Fox to Hanging" (77); and, best of all, "The Council of the Animals" (104-105). There is a curious illustration on 189, comparing the physiognomy of two humans with amazingly similar animals. I hope this book helps some Reinardian scholar some day! 7" x 10". 240 pages.
