Abstract
I find this book curious for two reasons. First of all, Schocken is a famous name in publishing. Salman Schocken emigrated from Berlin, where he had founded Schocken Verlag in 1931, to Jerusalem. In 1945 he founded Schocken Books in New York City. Did a Schocken Publishing House perdure in Palestine? Apparently! This book is explicitly acknowledged as "Printed in Palestine," Might this book have been among their first publications? That may make the book surprisingly valuable. The second reason is that this book uses Gustave Doré's illustrations for the fables of La Fontaine. I am unsure what this publication uses for "Fox Fables." Moses Hadas in 1967 has 119 of them based chiefly on the fables of Marie de France but including also some from Kalila and Dimna, Romulus, and Avienus. The beginning T of C here seems to list 155 items, but some of the last 40 may well be appendices or other non-fable materials.
