Abstract
This icon is one of the oldest of the Blessed Virgin in the world. Its history is shrouded in legend and tradition. Its origins can be traced to the fifth and sixth century. The dark coloring on the faces and hands is characteristic of pictures painted during this period. The scars on the face of Mary are from 1430, when bandits struck it with a sword.
