Abstract
This is a delightful presentation of the Märchen picked up and made famous by the Brothers Grimm. Peter Kunstreich anthropomorphizes the characters beautifully. I can see why the note facing the title page describes him as beloved by children. That note adds perceptively: "Vor allem seine Tierfiguren ermöglichen Kindern einen humorvollen Blick auf die ach so ernste Moral der Erwachsenen." Perhaps the most telling illustration here is the double-page showing the morning encounter between hare and hedgehog: arrogance versus down-to-earth friendliness. The hedgehog needs just an hour to execute his plan. The hare runs 73 laps before collapsing on the 74th. Bravo, Kunstreich!
