Abstract

This second volume, is, like the first, a re-issue of a book first published by Gordon Fraser Gallery in 1981. What a bargain! This copy happens to have its block separated from the spine. Like the first volume, it is beautifully executed! This volume has 20 pages for Bewick's figures and tail-pieces from "Fables of Aesop and Others," published in 1818 (209-218). The first half of this volume treats to "History of British Birds." Again here, the "fables" portion of this volume compares apprentices' engravings with preceding pencil-and-watercolor drawings. What comes through again for me is the meticulous character of the wood-engravings. Among the best is the oft-cited FC (212). Again there are tailpieces, this time with colored predecessors. Do not miss "The Devil Swinging on a Gibbet" (216). This time there are no appendices.
