Abstract
This is the twenty-fifth book in this collection illustrated by Romain Simon. It is not easy to find one's way among the many series done by this illustrator. I feel lucky to have found another book in this series, "Le Lièvre et la Tortue," found in St. Ouen ten years ago and published in 1976, a year before this booklet. Like that book, this one, about 7" x 8½", contains three fables of La Fontaine. In this case, those are: GA, FS, and OF. The illustrations are worthy of Simon, particularly the facing images on 6 and 7 of the ant cooking and the grasshopper playing and smiling. The ant never smiles! Also good are the images of the fox smelling the stork's stew (13) and the explosion of the frog (20). "Gentil Coquelicot," the series title, promises "Une Histoire -- Une Chanson -- Des Jeux." Here we get three stories. Then there is an invitation "Et Maintenant Jouons Ensemble," followed by questions on the three stories, with the answers printed upside down in blue (22-24). The back cover has the song: "Il était une dame Tartine." The song seems unrelated to the fables in this little volume. Canvas bound. The cover image has a grasshopper playing her violin on top of a mushroom while an ant walks away with a basket in her hand. Though the book is copyrighted in 1977, the verso of the title-page has a copyright for Hachette of 1954. Can we find a 1954 first edition?
