Abstract
Here is a fascinating volume. The title-page adds this: "Avec un tableau coloriƩ et avec beaucoup de figures coloriƩs et decoupees." I first wrote "Unfortunately, whatever these were, they are no longer present." A little research revealed what they are. This book included a heavy card with slots for various fable figures. The card and the figures have been removed from this copy. Even the second title-page in German and its verso, the beginning of the French preface, have been removed. What is left is a dual presentation of La Fontaine's French verse on the left side and corresponding rhyming German couplets in Gothic script on right-hand pages. The difference of this copy by contrast with other "Jeu des Fables" booklets available on the web is that this copy offers bilingual fables. Most publishers are French, and their texts are just La Fontaine's French. There are here fifteen such fables on 67 pages. Check our listing of one such French edition under "Games" in the "Toys" section of our web. 5" x 7".
