Birmingham Madonna Collection

Permanent URI for this collection

The Madonna collection holds 130 Madonnas from two centuries, a gift from the Birmingham Family of O'Neill, Nebraska, honoring DeMaris (Mrs. Hugh J.) Birmingham. Mrs. Birmingham started this collection in 1938, which grew to 400 pieces over time. These Madonnas vary in materials, ranging from porcelain to wax, wood, ivory, stained glass, and crystal, showcasing their diverse origins. Notable among them are antiques like a hand-painted porcelain figure from Hungary (1850) and an Austrian Madonna painted on silk around 1860. A part of this collection rotates for display on the second floor of the Reinert Alumni Library, offering a glimpse into the cultural diversity and beauty of these Madonnas.
